The Cable
modem is a router. Its primary function is to provide an interface
between the Internet and your Local Area Internet.
Every computer or server on the Internet needs an Internet Protocol address. The IP
address must be unique, like a phone number, so that information
packets can
find the right destination.
Your Cable router will be assigned a unique IP address by the ISP.
In turn, your Cable router will direct Internet traffic to all of the computers
in your office or home.
The Cable router will also assign default IP addresses to the computers
in your LAN.
The addresses will be similar to the one on my machine: 192.168.2.101
CAT5 (category 5) network cable is
similar to a phone cord. It's just a little bigger.
The cable is RJ-45, and the phone
cord is RJ-11.
When the phone cord is plugged in
right, the phone rings. The network cable works the same way.
