Updating old files

One of the administrator's jobs is keeping old  documents compatible with new software. According to Moore’s Law, the speed of computing doubles every 18 months.

Software changes rapidly, too. Before the dust has settled on your business, the files you created 5 years ago may not run on your current machines. In the 1990s, WordPerfect was the preferred word processor. Most businesses and government offices created their work in WordPerfect.

Word Perfect is not installed on a lot of computers, today. In this example, the WordPerfect file has a plain icon since no program is associated with it.

Installing WordPerfect may not be the best option. The goal is to update all of the files to the current version of the software used in the office now.
