3. Save As Type Microsoft Office 2007 also uses a new XML (Internet standard) file structure. When you create a new Word document, it is a .docx file, not the common .doc file.   This means, people who do NOT have Office 2007 can NOT read your file. They would need to download the free Word reader.   If you want other offices or departments to read your Word 2007 document, you have to change the File Type to Word 97-2003 to create a common .doc file.
