The Event
Viewer captures System, Application, and Security
data. It is a powerful tool. When you review the logs, look for
patterns. You may notice that failures happen repeatedly, perhaps at
a certain time of day or with a specific software program.
The System Administrator, that's you, needs a method for reporting
the system problems. Whether you use a Pivot
Table or a Database is immaterial: just get the data.
True Stories: The
Computer Mama
learned the hard way that the Administrator must document the changes
to the system and all of the computers in it.
In one company, there
were two broken computers that were passed around like bad pennies.
Pretty soon, those two bad computers were reported as 18 or 20
machines as more and more people ran into the bum hardware.
