What Are the Clues?
A computer
goes down, or an application fails, hours of work are lost. As the Administrator, you need detailed information when the computer isn’t
behaving right. There are several levels of administrative alerts:
A Black Screen is a dead computer: it won’t boot.
A Blue Screen of Death is a hardware problem. The computer
halts and may or may not restart until the hardware problem is
fixed.
The Event Viewer reports all of the problems. The
computer works, but it is not running right.
A little history: In the early days
of Windows NT, there was a program called Dr. Watson. The name is
from the
fictional character who helped Sherlock Holmes, Sir Arthur Conan
Doyle's detective.
A Dr. Watson error message
would pop on the screen indicating
there was a software problem, close the errant
program and make a log entry in the Event Viewer.
