TechTalk: Do You Have Enough Hardware?  Page 1 2 3 4 5 6

Hardware Maintenance

Computers are like children, they always need some attention as they grow. We feed them, fix them…and stay up all night with them.

Preventative Maintenance

Computers last longer in a clean environment free from dust, smoke and spilled beverages. You can clean the hardware with a mild cleaning pad. Anything that is gentle enough for your hands will be safe to use on the monitor, keyboard and mouse.

Listen to your computer

In general, there are only three things in a computer that can make noise: the hard drive, the fans, and the DVD/CD-ROM. These are all things that spin. Everything else is very quiet…they don’t move.

There is a normal pattern to the sounds as a computer boots up. Learn to listen for your computer's start up song. Then, you will be able to troubleshoot if something sounds noisy or different.

This Guide will present hardware in practical terms by what you can see, hear, configure and maintain.
