Cable Modems

Cable Modems use cable to transport the digital signal. With cable you can reach speeds of 1 to 5Mbs, or about 1/100th of speed on your LAN. Cable modems require a network card (NIC) and a Cable Modem. You can connect all of your computers to the Cable modem with a hub.

Satellite

Satellite service is another method of connecting to the Internet. In some rural areas Satellite may be your only alternative to a slow dial-up connection. The “upload” (which typically has a few bits of information) is usually slower than the rich data and image download. According to some sources, satellite is less expensive than ISDN connections.

As computers and television converge into a new medium, the need for speed--the technical term is bandwidth--will become more acute.

That’s all from the Sandbox, where only the latest and greatest survive!
