Sandbox: Network Options Page 1 2 3

Get Wired

Today, we’re going to look at some options for connecting all of our computers in the Local Area Network. Hardware, hardware, hardware. There are two popular cables used in networks: twisted pair (10BaseT) and thin coax. (10Base2).

Thin coax is similar to the wires used to connect your TV to Cable. Twisted pair looks like phone wire except that it has 8 wires instead of 4. The ends look a little fatter than a phone plug. In fact, phone plugs are called RJ11. Network connectors are typically RJ45. Twisted pair is the simplest and cheapest cabling to use in a small office.

If you only have two computers on a network, you can get away with a crossover cable. How does it work? Think of two phones. In order for them to talk, you flip the mouthpiece of one onto the earpiece of the other.
