Video Cards

Let's look at some options for upgrading your video card. The first question is what do you want to do? Video cards have become specialized in the last couple of years. One size may not fit all.

For entertainment, the guys in the SandBox recommend a 3D-video card. This adapter is optimized for quick vector calculations as the game rotates the perspective of the fantasy world.

Video cards have their own VRAM (Random Access Memory). This allows the card to process its own specific instructions, rather than using the RAM on the motherboard. More RAM on the video card makes the computer faster. First, the screen refreshes quicker. This is important with graphics programs and games. Second, the video card doesn’t have to share RAM with the operating system.

A typical 3D-video card has 64-128 MB of RAM. Hello? My first computer didn’t have 4 MB of RAM total! 3D video cards also have graphic accelerators to speed up the rendering as the characters move around.
