It amazes
me how many databases were developed in the 1970's and 80's, long
before Microsoft Windows was released. Very few companies could
afford a mainframe, so they purchased time on a shared computer. An
application that could calculate payroll could cost as much as
$250,000 to develop.
In the
1980s, about the time Apple created the Macintosh, programmers were
excited about fourth generation languages (4GL).
Machine
Code, 0s and 1s, was the first language. Assembly Language was
the second. Basic, Cobol, WATFIV, and Pascal were all part of the
third level of programming.
4GL was
important because it allowed programmers to create relational
databases on a personal computer.
